Xanadu or Don’t?

Remember Xanadu?  The Olivia Newton-John/Gene Kelly roller-skating “musical fantasy” that was released in 1980 to scathing reviews and lackluster box-office returns, only to evolve over the years into a cult classic?  Well, of course you do!  (You are gay, right?)  And if not the film—and depending on your age, of course—you must at least be familiar with its successful ONJ/ELO soundtrack.  If you answered “no” to either, well fuck off already (ha ha).  But if you answered “yes” to either, then you may or may not (and again, fuck off if that’s a “not”) be as thrilled as me by the news that Xanadu is coming to Broadway this spring!

Last year I started to hear and read rumors that a stage adaptation was being workshopped for an off-Broadway production. It wasn’t long before those rumors were confirmed and the musical’s destination changed from “off” to “on” Broadway, set to open in May 2007 at the Helen Hayes Theater in New York.

But who would be cast in this stage version of the cult film classic?  Until February 1, the part that Olivia originated was to be played by Jane Krakowski, the Tony award winning actress (for the 2003 musical, “Nine”) best known for her former role on television as Elaine on “Ally McBeal”, and for her current role as Jenna on “30 Rock”.  Jane had starred in all of the workshops and is a familiar and respected name in the theatrical community.  Alas, according to Variety, the talented actress’ day job prevents her from lacing up for the great white way this spring (and that’s a shame).

Despite casting news not yet announced, the musical’s opening night remains scheduled for May.

I for one intend on checking it out—did I mention that I have an original movie poster for Xanadu framed and displayed in my living room?—and am obviously hoping that when it opens, the attention it receives is more in line with “Spamalot” than “Taboo”.

According to the opening lyrics of the title song, Xanadu is “a place, where nobody dared to go”.  Let’s hope that doesn’t ring true on Broadway.

Cheers,

S.R.
