Oscar Fever

Let the countdown begin. Two weeks from tonight will no doubt be a departure of sorts for a lot of gay men. Instead of checking out who’s on-line, they’ll be checking out who’s on TV…at the 78th Academy Awards on ABC.

Aside from judging which female celebrity is the best and worst dressed, or who has the best and worst hairstyle, the Oscars is a great night for salivating over hot actors in tuxedos. As if that isn’t enough to keep my fellow fags glued to their set for a few hours, this year offers an added incentive. As demonstrated by two of the films up for Best Picture, the instant classic Brokeback Mountain (8 nominations) and the fascinating Capote (5 nominations), it was a very good year for gay characters in cinema.

Given the number of awards he’s already (deservedly) received for his portrayal of Truman Capote, I’d be shocked if the gifted Philip Seymour Hoffman doesn’t take home the Best Actor Oscar. What would really be nice though is if there was a tie, and the award was shared by both Hoffman and Heath Ledger. Much like the entire film, Ledger’s performance in Brokeback Mountain is one that haunts long after leaving the theater, and it’s something that should be recognized by the Academy.

It’s not like there’s never been a tie before. Back in 1932, Wallace Berry won an Oscar for Best Actor for The Champ, along with Fredric March for Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. More “recently” in 1969, Barbra Streisand won a Best Actress award for Funny Girl, as did Katharine Hepburn for her work in The Lion In Winter. Sir Randy has his fingers crossed for both Philip and Heath.

A three-way I’d like to see (but not necessarily as in a tie for the Oscar win) involves studly Supporting Actor nominees Jake Gyllenhaal (Jack Twist from Brokeback Mountain), George Clooney (Syriana) and Matt Dillon (Crash). I’d be more than happy to even out that odd number, if you know what I mean. Yum.

So will Brokeback Mountain sweep this year’s Oscars? Will triple nominee Clooney bring home some hardware? What male celeb would you like most to help out of his tuxedo at the end of the evening? And who will be at the top of Sir Randy’s most wanted list that night?

Stay tuned…
