Madonna’s Musical Moment In The Gardens
Grey Gardens, the brilliant 1976 documentary about Jackie O’s beyond eccentric aunt and cousin is part tragedy, part comedy and now thanks to a gifted contributor on You Tube, is equipped with a music video clip deserving of heavy rotation on MTV.
For those unfamiliar with the film, you should really check it out (especially if you are a bit of drama queen, or know someone who is). In Entertainment Weekly’s listing (from a few years ago) of the Top Cult Films of All-Time, Grey Gardens came in at a respectable # 33 and is accurately described as “Proof positive that when an aristocratic American family gets big enough, some relatives will wind up shut-ins at an overgrown, feline-infested East Hampton mansion belting out shrill show tunes and feeding wild raccoons whole bags of Wonder bread in the attic. This bizarre, sad and touching portrait of elderly Edith Bouvier Beale (Jackie Kennedy’s aunt) and her middle-aged ex-model daughter “Little” Edie, instantly became one of the most talked-about documentaries of all time.”
And now comes word that the story of Edith and “Little†Edie is getting the Hollywood treatment with Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore in starring roles. Needless to say, the new film should be interesting; particularly to fans of the documentary.
But back to the music video clip. Someone on You Tube has selected scenes from Grey Gardens—ones that showcase the lovely and loonie “Little†Edie—and set it to Madonna’s recent hit “Hung Upâ€. The results are hilarious and will have you scratching your head wondering how someone knew that the perfect score for Edie’s dance “performances” would be this song.
The best way to access the clip is to go to You Tube and then enter “Hung Up Edie Beale†into the search engine. It’s such a perfect match that you’ll be shaking your head in disbelief while shaking your ass in time with the tune. And then pick up a copy of Grey Gardens. Like the music clip it’s an experience not to be missed, but for completely different reasons.
