Battle of the Blockbuster Bulge
With the May 1 release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the official start to the summer blockbuster season has begun; only in Hollywood could summer arrive when it’s still spring. And one of the best aspects of the blockbuster season, superficially at least, is the amount of beefcake on display.

Last year’s summer stud parade included Christian Bale (The Dark Knight), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Will Smith (Hancock), and James McAvoy (Wanted). So what’s in store for the summer of 2009? Who has the nicest muscles on screen…and who will flex the best at the box office?

First out of the gate is also first-rate. Wolverine’s Hugh Jackman looks almost achingly good in what has become a defining role for him on-screen and made him a sex symbol off-screen. That face, those arms, the ass…yum, yum AND yum! But he’s not the only X-Men hottie in this flick. Let’s not forget Canadian stud Ryan Reynolds, or Taylor Kitsch (of Friday Night Lights). And am I and Naomi Watts the only ones who think Liev Schreiber is sexy?

This past weekend I saw Star Trek (Mother’s Day plans prevented me from making it to a pre-Desperate Housewives screening of Wolverine) and I have to say that the latest in the sci-fi franchise was awesome; and that’s coming from someone who is not a huge fan of anything Star Trek-related. No shortage of attractive men in the cast either. Chris Pine, admirably filling his cotton briefs in one scene with what appears to be a plentiful basket (call him Captain Cock), is the obvious stud-in-the-making here. But let’s not forget Aussie Eric Bana, oh so good as the oh so bad Romulan warrior, or Zachary Quinto as Mr. Spock, who according to a friend of a friend allegedly has a huge endowment (call him Mr. Cock).

Later this month, last year’s Dark Knight, Christian Bale, returns to the summer stud patrol in Terminator Salvation. And from what I’ve seen, he’s in very good company with co-star Sam Worthington, a relatively unknown actor from Australia. (Wait a minute; Jackman, Bana and now Worthington? Talk about an invasion from Down Under this summer!)

June offers up Shia LaBeouf (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), Ryan Reynolds (again, this time in the Sandra Bullock flick, The Proposal) and Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), while July gives us a second dose of Bale (along with perpetually young, eternally handsome Johnny Depp) in Public Enemies.

Wow, that’s a lot of testosterone coming to the multiplexes in the next few months. Are you man enough to take it? I know I’m sure going to give it my best shot. And hopefully enjoy every minute of it!

Cheerio!
