And the Oscar (maybe) goes to…
The Oscars will be handed out a week from today, and unless you’re attending the actual ceremony you’ll probably be watching them on television in the privacy of someone’s home or at an Oscar party locally. If you’re like me, you’ll also be throwing a few bucks into an Oscar pool with hopes of predicting the most winners and then taking home the jackpot (along with bragging rights, of course).Â
Â
Reviewing this year’s list of nominees, it’s unlikely that one film will sweep the awards; which means that predicting who will take home the golden boy is going to be a bit of a challenge. Following an afternoon of research and contemplation—while watching Seven Brides for Seven Brothers on television–here are my predictions for this year’s Academy Award winners:
BEST PICTURE – The Departed
BEST DIRECTOR – Martin Scorcese, The Departed
BEST ACTOR – Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland
BEST ACTRESS – Helen Mirren, The Queen
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR – Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS – Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY – Michael Arndt, Little Miss Sunshine
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY – William Monahan, The Departed
ANIMATED FEATURE FILM – Cars
FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM – Pan’s Labyrinth
ART DIRECTION – Pan’s Labyrinth
CINEMATOGRAPHY – Children of Men
COSTUME DESIGN – Curse of the Golden Flower
DOCUMENTARY FEATURE – An Inconvenient Truth
DOCUMENTARY SHORT – Two Hands
FILM EDITING – The Departed
MAKEUP – Pan’s Labyrinth
VISUAL EFFECTS – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
ORIGINAL SCORE – Alexandre Desplat, The Queen
ORIGINAL SONG – “Listenâ€, Dreamgirls
ANIMATED SHORT – Lifted
LIVE-ACTION SHORT – Helmer & Son
SOUND EDITING – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
SOUND MIXING – Dreamgirls
For better or worse, I’ve seen many of the films (and performances, etc…) nominated, but whether that works for or against me remains to be seen. So there you have it, Sir Randy’s Oscars predictions. What do you think?
 Cheers!
S.R.
